Hibiscus keeps a strict schedule. Every blossom spreads at dawn and shuts by nightfall, which makes this Ito Nishiki kimono pattern art print a small act of magic. Here the one-day flower sits fixed in brass-toned gilt on a cobalt field, long overdue for its own wilting.

Ito Nishiki means thread brocade. And this sheet is its rehearsal. A hand-painted Japanese textile design of the sort Nishijin weavers in Kyoto read before warping a loom. An anonymous designer painted it flat, sometime in Edo's final century or the Meiji years after it. Scalloped petals gather in pleats, and a cinnabar hairline rules the folds. At lower left a second flower head tips forward and shows its pollen-studded pistil. Spidery foliage spins on its stalks. The vines borrow the old karakusa arabesque, with arcs that cross and never knot.

Tokugawa sumptuary edicts once barred townspeople from gold-thread embroidery, so a design this gilded carried a charge. Picture it wound around a waist as an obi on a summer street, lit by lanterns.

Hang this Japanese art print and the wall becomes a loom at rest, each metallic vein still waiting for its thread. On your wall, this vintage Japanese floral design finishes the kosode's old trick. A flower meant to close by evening stays out all night.

Origin Story

Ito Nishiki — literally "yarn brocade" — names the luminous weft-patterned silk of Kyoto's Nishijin district, where dyed threads and gilded metallic strands cross the warp to summon rabbits, florals, and geometric lattices across kimono and obi cloth. Its lineage descends from the weft brocades once called karanishiki, refined through the Nara and Heian courts into a distinctly Japanese idiom.

Each panel testifies to Nishijin's divided labour — dyers, pattern-drafters, and weavers passing silk, gold, and silver leaf through raised warp threads. Surviving examples still circulate as fine art prints, a quiet testament to Kyoto's enduring textile craft.

How to Hang your Artwork

1. D-rings (most secure)

Screw a D-ring onto the back of the frame on the left and right, both at the same height. A ruler helps here. Then put two screws in the wall where you want your canvas, level with each other and spaced the same distance apart as the D-rings. A spirit level makes this easier. Finally, hook the D-rings onto the screws.

How to Hang your Artwork

2. Straight onto screws

Keep it simple: put two screws in the wall at the same height and rest the inner lip at the top of the back of the frame on them.
