This horse skull art print tilts out of lampblack like a dropped compass needle, poll at upper left and muzzle aimed low right. One eye socket gapes wide. Light slips straight through it. Sepia photography this close turns bone into weather. Cracked ivory plates carry an ochre undertone, and umber pools in each foramen where nerves once ran to the lips.

Look along the mandible. Its broad curve carries the weight of the image, freckled with pits and hairline fractures in honey-toned parchment. Near the tip a shard of premaxilla drifts free, caught mid-fall.

Count the cheek teeth. Tall and ridged, they sit in the jaw like a buried fence line, ground level by years of grazing. Above them the facial crest climbs toward a broken zygomatic arch. The nasal bone splinters forward into a pale spur.

George Stubbs dissected horses in a Lincolnshire farmhouse before etching The Anatomy of the Horse in 1766. Georgia O’Keeffe shipped barrels of sun-bleached bones from New Mexico and painted Horse’s Skull with Pink Rose in 1931. This equine skull photograph inherits both obsessions under raking chiaroscuro. Hang it as Southwestern wall art or dark academia decor. A memento mori with hooves still implied, galloping somewhere off the edge of the print.

Origin Story

Long before the gallery wall, the animal skull lived inside the home. At Neolithic Çatalhöyük in Anatolia, plastered bull skulls thrust their horns into living rooms, while beaks, tusks and teeth were set into the walls beside them. Greece named the ox skull bucranium and the goat skull aegicranium; Rome garlanded the bucranium across marble altars. Later, Flemish miniaturist Joris Hoefnagel perched a curlew and a crow upon a horse skull, natural history shadowed by mortality.

Horse skulls led a folk afterlife, hidden beneath floors across Ireland, Wales, England and Scandinavia, perhaps to ward off evil, perhaps to settle a room's acoustics. In Glamorgan, the ribboned Mari Lwyd has sung door to door since at least 1800. Modernism inherited the bones: O’Keeffe’s sun-bleached cow, horse and ram skulls from New Mexico, Picasso’s goat skull crowned with bicycle-handlebar horns.

How to Hang your Artwork

1. D-rings (most secure)

Screw a D-ring onto the back of the frame on the left and right, both at the same height. A ruler helps here. Then put two screws in the wall where you want your canvas, level with each other and spaced the same distance apart as the D-rings. A spirit level makes this easier. Finally, hook the D-rings onto the screws.

How to Hang your Artwork

2. Straight onto screws

Keep it simple: put two screws in the wall at the same height and rest the inner lip at the top of the back of the frame on them.
