Start at the waterline. A leaf-crowned head rises from a sea of soot, one moth wing folded at its shoulder and a hand curled mid-wave. This is Redon's Angel of Certitude, plate four of his À Edgar Poe series... like a telegram from a dream.

Follow the slant of ash-gray light behind the angel's back. It points up the somber sky to a disembodied eye sealed in a bone-white globe, parked under a torn cloud. The eye interrogates and gets silence for its trouble. Odilon Redon grew up lonely on a Médoc wine estate, and loneliness taught him how hard a night can stare.

He drew in greasy crayon, a trade learned from Henri Fantin-Latour, and the stone turned his charcoal habits into French Symbolism. Two years on, Huysmans hung Redon's nightmares inside his Decadent novel À rebours. The Surrealists came knocking later.

As a vintage fine art print, this 1882 lithograph gives your room a horizon and a witness. Somewhere past the frame, the tide keeps rising toward that grin.

Origin Story

Odilon Redon (1840–1916) was a visionary French artist whose haunting and luminous works bridged Symbolism and Post-Impressionism, laying foundations for Surrealism.

Born in Bordeaux, Redon began his career crafting enigmatic charcoal drawings and lithographs, termed his noirs, which captured dreamlike, symbolic worlds.

Influenced by Eastern philosophy, Japanese aesthetics, and literary symbolism, Redon later embraced radiant pastels and oils, producing vibrant, mystical images that resonated with imagination and inner contemplation.

From his introspective portraits and ethereal floral arrangements to mythological visions, Redon transformed art into poetic meditations, ensuring his enduring legacy as one of modern art’s most evocative masters.

Framed Art Prints

1. Vertical

Use the sawtooth hanger at the top middle on the back of the frame and hang it on a single screw or nail.

2. Horizontal

Hang the two sawtooth hangers on two screws or nails at the same heightPut two screws or nails in the wall at the same height, spaced the same distance apart as the two sawtooth hangers, then hang your print on them.

Framed Canvas

1. D-rings (most secure)

Screw a D-ring onto the back of the frame on the left and right, both at the same height. A ruler helps here. Then put two screws in the wall where you want your canvas, level with each other and spaced the same distance apart as the D-rings. A spirit level makes this easier. Finally, hook the D-rings onto the screws.

2. Straight onto screws

Keep it simple: put two screws in the wall at the same height and rest the inner lip at the top of the back of the frame on them.
