Hasui fixes the Omiya shrine precinct in pigment, as arboreal silhouettes guard the approach to Hikawa Park. The 1930 vertical format captures pine trees ascending through a turquoise gradient, their sienna canopies burning against the nocturne blue above.

Bokashi washes create a crepuscular light that seems to emanate from within the paper itself, the Showa era printmaker exploiting wood grain texture to suggest bark and needle.

Russet crowns float like embers in the dusk, each cluster a meditation on nature worship encoded in Saitama's soil. The Meiji legacy of scenic observation meets shin-hanga modernism here, as indigo trunks slice the composition with calligraphic certainty.

Hasui's eye for twilight hues renders the scene in muted reverence, the print preserving a specific moment of atmospheric stillness. Japanese woodblock print techniques serve the artist's vision of sacred space here. As verticality becomes a form of devotion and the cyan void holds the weight of evening silence.

Origin Story

Hasui Kawase (1883–1957) was Japan’s great poet of place, etching twilight rivers, temple courtyards, and snow-laden lanes into the soul of modern printmaking. A master of the shin-hanga movement, he fused ukiyo-e tradition with Western naturalism, creating nearly 1,000 woodblock prints shimmering with atmosphere, moonlight, and rain. Born in Tokyo, Hasui abandoned his family’s trade after its collapse to study art under Kiyokata Kaburagi, who gave him the name “Hasui”—“water gushing from a spring.” Collaborating with publisher Shōzaburō Watanabe, Hasui redefined landscape art for Japan’s new century. Revered abroad, crowned a Living National Treasure in 1956, his prints endure as lyrical windows into a vanishing Japan.

How to Hang your Artwork

1. Vertical

Use the sawtooth hanger at the top middle on the back of the frame and hang it on a single screw or nail.

2. Horizontal

Hang the two sawtooth hangers on two screws or nails at the same heightPut two screws or nails in the wall at the same height, spaced the same distance apart as the two sawtooth hangers, then hang your print on them.

How to Hang your Artwork

1. D-rings (most secure)

Screw a D-ring onto the back of the frame on the left and right, both at the same height. A ruler helps here. Then put two screws in the wall where you want your canvas, level with each other and spaced the same distance apart as the D-rings. A spirit level makes this easier. Finally, hook the D-rings onto the screws.

How to Hang your Artwork

2. Straight onto screws

Keep it simple: put two screws in the wall at the same height and rest the inner lip at the top of the back of the frame on them.
