About the Artist

Utagawa Kuniyoshi (1798–1861) was ukiyo-e’s unruly visionary—a rebel printmaker who summoned warrior ghosts, cat parodies, kabuki dreams, and mythic beasts with equal fervor. Born to a silk-dyer in Edo, he fused wild storytelling with daring composition, pioneering triptychs, supernatural musha-e, and politically charged satirical prints that slipped past censors. His Suikoden heroes, tattooed and defiant, electrified a generation, while his phantasmagoric battles and sly caricatures shaped the DNA of manga and anime. A master of mood and motion, Kuniyoshi blurred the line between heroism and hallucination—leaving behind a legacy as bold and ungovernable as his art.
