About this Artwork

In Hammer Throw (1908), Penfield painted strength as silhouette. The male figure braces wide on chalk-white-clad legs, the cable taut between his laced fingers and a graphite-black iron shot at the left edge of the composition. That line — from knuckle to sphere — is the picture's spine. And the raw background amplifies its tension by stripping the image of any spatial relief.

Penfield, whose poster designs for Harper's Monthly made him the definitive voice of American commercial illustration at the turn of the twentieth century, translates the track-and-field event into pure graphic statement: cobalt-navy against warm tan, cadmium-red stripe against pale salmon flesh, each ink plane set down flat in the chromolithographic tradition.

The 1908 London Olympics transformed hammer throwing into an internationally watched discipline, and Penfield's Edwardian poster-art sensibility meets that moment squarely — an athlete pressed into bold outline, where physical culture, national athletic identity, and the grammar of the printed broadside converge in a single arrested rotation.

Artist Biography

Edward Penfield (1866–1925) was an influential American illustrator and graphic designer, known as a key figure in the development of American poster art.

He trained at the Art Students League in New York and became the art director at Harper's magazine, where he created iconic monthly posters that defined the visual style of the 1890s.

Penfield’s work, known for its bold lines and effective use of color, drew inspiration from Japanese prints and French artists like Toulouse-Lautrec.

He played a major role in shaping American graphic design, continuing to produce posters, book covers, and commercial art throughout his career.
