About the Artwork

At noon the sun takes every shadow out of the square, and the minaret stands against an ultramarine sky that presses in from every side. Clarence Gagnon builds the tower from olive, mustard and ochre panels and crowns it with a white band of notched battlements. And every household in this square keeps its day by this one tower.

A Moroccan minaret is a square shaft with each face patterned in its own section, which is why the panels here read as separate blocks of flat color. Gagnon, an etcher as well as a painter, sets each one down with a printmaker's firm outline, so the tower spends no stroke it does not need. Its four faces take the light one at a time as the day turns.

Before loudspeakers, a muezzin climbed the inside of a minaret like this to call the hour from its gallery. Under that call the market woke and rested, and the flat-roofed houses below it huddle in cream and lemon. A low ridge of blue-gray hills closes the horizon beyond them.

Small figures in red and ochre cross the foreground under gray awnings, each one a single dab of pure pigment. At noon the sun flattens every shape in the square, and the canvas keeps that flatness. Glare strips the foreground of shadow, so the figures read as color first and as people second. Stiff ridges of paint in the sky catch the light as you pass.

Great Mosque, Morocco awaits your living room or hallway as an ultramarine minaret painting, where one tall tower sets the pace of everything around it.

Origin Story

Clarence Gagnon (1881–1942) was a French Canadian painter, engraver and illustrator who carried the hush of Quebec winter into modern landscape painting. Born in Montreal, he studied with William Brymner at the Art Association of Montreal, then at the Académie Julian in Paris under Jean-Paul Laurens, where the example of Eugène Boudin and James W. Morrice lightened his palette and introduced the sketch box.

Settling in Baie-Saint-Paul in 1907, he painted Laurentian winters, habitant life and Charlevoix villages in small oils and prints, with A.Y. Jackson and Edwin Holgate joining him on sketching trips. His 1913 exhibition at Galerie A. M. Reitlinger in Paris was the first for a living Canadian artist. He later illustrated Louis-Frédéric Rouquette’s Le Grand silence blanc and Louis Hémon’s Maria Chapdelaine, the 1933 edition rendered in gouache.
