About the Artwork

Four seated maiko in traditional Japanese costumes lean over a tatami floor scattered with pastel-colored Uta-garuta cards, and the whole room waits on one hand. This hand-colored photograph from Meiji-era Japan catches a karuta round at its tightest second. The girl at right reads from a small stack. Her three rivals hunt the primrose yellow and shell pink squares for the match.

Look at the reach. A sleeve of celadon and russet lattice slides forward, fingers an inch from the prize. Beside her a lacquer-red obi cinches a kimono thick with flowers. A moss-green windowpane check crouches low at the far left. Plum-blossom pink kanzashi nod in every upswept knot of hair, and tea cools in small white cups.

Behind the young women, the photographer’s studio stays sepia. A bamboo scroll hangs in the tokonoma. Cranes cross a folding screen and nobody looks up. Karuta came out at New Year in Japanese homes, a contest of memory and fast wrists.

The trade called pictures like this Yokohama shashin, hand-tinted souvenirs pasted into albums and shipped across oceans. Buyers came for Fuji and temple gates. This sheet slipped them an afternoon of sweets and teacups, and one pale card still waiting to be turned.

Origin Story

Uta-garuta (歌ガルタ, “poetry karuta”) is a Japanese card game with two ancestries. One is courtly: kai-awase, the shell-matching game of Heian aristocrats, clam interiors often painted with Tale of Genji scenes. The other is foreign: playing cards carried by Portuguese traders in the mid-sixteenth century, whose carta became karuta. By the early seventeenth century, shells had become cards. Edo-period woodblock printing put decks within reach of all walks of life.

Its verse is the Hyakunin Isshu, one hundred waka chosen by Fujiwara no Teika in the Kamakura period. A reader intones a full poem from the yomifuda; players lunge for the torifuda bearing its closing lines. In 1904 the Tokyo Karuta Association unified the rules and held the first tournament. Competitive karuta crowns champions each January at Omi Shrine; households still play at Japanese New Year.
