Cobalt blue pools behind him in a gold-bordered disc that the Saturday Evening Post's 1920s readership would have absorbed as a badge of pure American aspiration.
Leyendecker works in pulled strokes: the cream duster pooling in his lap a cascade of warm ivory shadow and ivory highlight, each fold recorded with the same oil-pigment fidelity he gave to Arrow Collar advertisements. Rust-striped pants, brass helmet hardware, a lacquered water bucket — every prop charged with the pregame locker-room ritual of early collegiate football culture.
