A fat devil has kicked off from a chimney, and the village below has no idea. Flying Devil catches him mid-launch from underneath, his belly a flesh-toned moon hung over rust red roof tiles.

Rudolf von Seitz painted ceilings and a church apse in Munich, and Flying Devil borrows their trick. Tilt your head back. The cherub of every Rococo vault has gone to seed. He is a bearded putto now, horned and hairy to the knees, and he steers through wind by a fistful of his own tail.

The Munich painter built his flying devil as a pen and ink drawing first. Short curls of lampblack cross-hatching sprout over chest and thigh, a pelt grown one hair at a time in the manner of a German Renaissance woodcut. Watercolor wash came second, moss green soaking the bat wings until they sag with weather. A coiled ram’s horn sits above his pointed ear. He glances down, smug.

Old devil folklore kept the chimney as his private door, the sooty way out of a sleeping house. Seitz, a fixture of 19th-century German art, turns that fear into caricature: a grotesque too well fed to scare the neighbors. Slate gray cloud rakes the sky. Beneath that dangling foot a whitewashed gable keeps two windows shut. Under his claws the rooftops hold still, and the storm has a landlord now.

Origin Story

Rudolf von Seitz (1842–1910) was a Munich painter, illustrator, and designer who believed beauty should reach from the ceiling to the bread stamp. Taught first by his father, decorative artist Franz von Seitz, he entered the Academy of Fine Arts, Munich, under Karl von Piloty, then traded genre painting for ornament. Rococo frames and German late Renaissance flourishes curled around grand editions of Goethe’s Faust and Schiller’s Glocke, making him a leading voice in Munich’s applied arts.

In 1878 he co-founded Seitz & Seidl with architect Gabriel von Seidl, furnishing interiors down to chandeliers and tapestries, and helped dress Linderhof Palace for Ludwig II. Richard Wagner rejected his Parsifal costumes as too bejewelled. As curator at the Bavarian National Museum and professor of art restoration, Seitz crowned St. Anna im Lehel with an apse fresco and drew for Jugend magazine.

How to Hang your Artwork

1. D-rings (most secure)

Screw a D-ring onto the back of the frame on the left and right, both at the same height. A ruler helps here. Then put two screws in the wall where you want your canvas, level with each other and spaced the same distance apart as the D-rings. A spirit level makes this easier. Finally, hook the D-rings onto the screws.

How to Hang your Artwork

2. Straight onto screws

Keep it simple: put two screws in the wall at the same height and rest the inner lip at the top of the back of the frame on them.
