About the Artist

Ishida Yūtei (1721–1786) was a pivotal figure in 18th-century Japanese painting, standing at the crossroads of tradition and transformation. Born into the Tachibana family and later adopted by Hanzaemon Ishida, he trained under Tangei Tsurusawa, a disciple of Kano Tanyu. Though rooted in the formalized Kano school, Yūtei infused his works with Rinpa’s poetic repetition and an emergent naturalism that anticipated the Maruyama style. As a mentor to Maruyama Ōkyo, he laid the groundwork for a new realism in Japanese art. Awarded the title Hōkyō for his achievements, Yūtei helped shape Kyoto’s artistic renaissance.
