Four men stand in the amber haze of Finnish-Yankee sauna heat. Marsden Hartley’s brush drags umber and ochre across their torsos, mapping working-class muscle beneath early 20th-century Maine light.

The composition tightens into a homosocial space where modernist figuration meets Regionalist truth. Impasto ridges catch the eye along collarbone and thigh, paint thick as sauna steam. Flesh tones glow between cool violet backgrounds and warm sienna highlights, bodies rendered with the honest weight of Finnish immigrant labor.

The paint handles like wet heat itself, impasto thick on haunch and shoulder, turpentine wash thinning to transparency at the edges. Every stroke celebrating the male form’s architecture, from knotted spine to heavy thigh, the communal silence of Finnish immigrants finding warmth in frozen climes.

This American modernist scene captures bathhouse intimacy without apology. Brushstroke texture records the slap of birch against skin, the shared silence of men in heat. Archival giclee printing preserves every umber wash, every ochre undertone and every gesture of working-class masculinity caught between Old World ritual and New World promise.

Origin Story

Marsden Hartley (1877–1943) was the American Modernist who painted grief and granite with equal force. Born Edmund Hartley in Lewiston, Maine, he studied under William Merritt Chase and found a champion in Alfred Stieglitz, debuting at the 291 gallery in 1909. In Paris he absorbed Cézanne and Picasso; in Berlin, alongside Kandinsky and Franz Marc, he forged his War Motif abstractions—Portrait of a German Officer (1914) mourning his beloved Karl von Freyburg in flags, medals, and coded numbers.

A restless wanderer through New Mexico, Provence, Mexico, and Nova Scotia, Hartley returned home in 1937 to become "the painter of Maine." His Mount Katahdin canvases and rugged fishermen fused mysticism with modernism, turning loss into monumental American landscape.

How to Hang your Artwork

1. D-rings (most secure)

Screw a D-ring onto the back of the frame on the left and right, both at the same height. A ruler helps here. Then put two screws in the wall where you want your canvas, level with each other and spaced the same distance apart as the D-rings. A spirit level makes this easier. Finally, hook the D-rings onto the screws.

How to Hang your Artwork

2. Straight onto screws

Keep it simple: put two screws in the wall at the same height and rest the inner lip at the top of the back of the frame on them.
