Tsukioka Kogyo's Aoinoue art print catches Lady Rokujo at the instant jealousy grows horns. Her hannya mask bares a lacquer-red mouth, gilt eyes fixed on a folded vermilion kosode standing in for Lady Aoi, Prince Genji's wife, sick on the Noh stage. Kogyo trusted the empty dove-gray ground to carry the dread.
Study the sleeves. Slate-blue triangles tile her white robe in the uroko scale pattern, a costume code for a woman turning serpent from the inside out. Lower down, a teal overskirt churns with pewter clouds and black-winged birds, bunched in one fist like weather she won't set down. Her striped striking wand points at nobody... yet.
Kogyo, adopted son of Tsukioka Yoshitoshi, drew actors he watched from real theater seats. Printed in 1922 for Nōgaku Hyakuban, this Taishō-era Japanese woodblock print pulls the Heian court of The Tale of Genji into pigment and carved cherry wood.
