About the Artist

Pietro Fabris (active 1740–1792) was a painter of Italian descent whose brush captured both the drama of erupting volcanoes and the intimacy of everyday life. Best remembered for his collaboration with Sir William Hamilton, Fabris documented the fiery tempests of Vesuvius, Etna, and the Phlegraean Fields in engravings for Observations on Mount Vesuvius (1774) and Campi Phlegraei (1776). These works fused art with science, transforming geology into spectacle. Beyond volcanic visions, Fabris painted vivid Bamboccianti scenes—peasants in native dress at work and leisure, folkloric yet immediate. Exhibiting in London and thriving in Naples, he bridged Enlightenment curiosity with painterly theatre, leaving a legacy at once scientific and poetic.
