Giclée Printing

Listen to this picture and you hear bare soles slapping stone in three different tempos. Arnold Genthe trails three men up the hill toward a gate: one rolls a white bundle on his head, and two bend under dark sacks that sway with each step. Arnold Genthe follows from behind with a slow exposure, so bare calves draw out into streaks while every cobble stays sharp. One man balances a white bundle on his head and two carry dark sacks that sag across their shoulders.

Ahead a horseshoe arch opens onto a second vault, and through that one a pale wall catches the light. Plaster on either side has given up in patches of bark-brown and ash-gray. Medina lanes like this are steep and too narrow for carts, so burdens travel on heads and shoulders. Trade into the medina arrived this way, sacks of grain and bundles of cloth carried one back at a time.

The white bundle is the brightest thing in the print, and damp stone shines where their feet have passed. The men never look back. Genthe would later photograph the dancer Isadora Duncan in motion, and the same eye for a body in mid-step is already at work on this hill.
