Origin Story

Antonio Cortina Farinós (1841–1890) was a Spanish painter, decorator, and art teacher who rose from the manure carts of childhood to Valencia's Real Academia de Bellas Artes de San Carlos. Born in Almàssera, he earned the nickname "El Femateret" gathering waste for his family's fields before a local sculptor recognized his talent for line. Fellowships, medals, and academic honors soon followed.

Cortina's later career fused fine art with decorative craft: café interiors across Spain and France, church murals throughout the Valencian Community, and portraits such as The Model Takes a Rest. Appointed acting professor of line drawing in 1890, he died that same year in Madrid, honored by a memorial auction for his widow.
