This demon lands mid-stride on oyster-gray hanji, a Korean woodblock print pulled in the nineteenth century under the Joseon dynasty. Two crescent horns hook above an ox muzzle. His fist clamps the forked ends of a cheonui, the celestial scarf Buddhist image-makers tied onto armored sinjang, and the cloth swings overhead in one wide loop.

The uniform is exact. A quatrefoil stud pins the chest strap above a belt of square plaques. Lamellar plates ladder the hip toward a spiral disc on the knee that drives earthward. Hell scrolls of the Ten Kings staff their courts with ox-headed jailers, horned clerks of punishment who herd the dead toward judgment. Here one runs alone.

A knife cleared the plank around every line. Soot ink went on by brush before the sheet was laid across the block and rubbed from behind. That friction still freckles the scarf tails, charcoal crumbling into grit where cloth coils around his boot. Two seals pin the margins, and between them this Joseon demon keeps running.

Origin Story

The Joseon dynasty (1392–1897) was Korea’s last royal house, a Confucian kingdom sustaining five centuries of brilliance and upheaval. Founded by General Yi Seong-gye, crowned King Taejo, it rose from the fall of Goryeo and made Hanyang, today’s Seoul, its capital, where Gyeongbokgung Palace sits beneath granite peaks. Neo-Confucianism shaped law, family ritual and the yangban scholar-officials who governed through civil service examinations. In 1443, King Sejong the Great created Hangul, an alphabet built so ordinary people could read.

Art pursued the same restraint: snowy white porcelain moon jars, earthy buncheong ware, Jeong Seon’s true-view landscapes of Mount Geumgang, Kim Hong-do’s lively genre scenes. The Imjin War (1592–1598), when Admiral Yi Sun-sin’s turtle ships guarded the southern seas, and the Manchu invasions tested its resilience. Proclaimed the Korean Empire in 1897, its royal line ended with Japan’s annexation in 1910.

How to Hang your Artwork

1. D-rings (most secure)

Screw a D-ring onto the back of the frame on the left and right, both at the same height. A ruler helps here. Then put two screws in the wall where you want your canvas, level with each other and spaced the same distance apart as the D-rings. A spirit level makes this easier. Finally, hook the D-rings onto the screws.

How to Hang your Artwork

2. Straight onto screws

Keep it simple: put two screws in the wall at the same height and rest the inner lip at the top of the back of the frame on them.
