Death comes barefoot down the cobbles. Fritz Philipp Schmidt gives his Grim Reaper a soft-brimmed hat and a hand on the hip, like a neighbor with news nobody ordered. The scythe rides under one arm. Its long snath slides forward until the tip taps the plank door of a half-timbered farmhouse.

Nobody answers yet. Ivy sags over the lintel, and a stool by the step waits for whoever sat there this morning. Dresden-born Schmidt stayed loyal to German late Romantic painting, so this visitor reached him through old paper.

Holbein drew death for the Totentanz woodcuts in Basel. Alfred Rethel made him gentle in Death as a Friend, an 1851 wood engraving that sold across Germany. Schmidt sends that same memento mori to a farm door with a grin. Bare toe bones grip the cobblestones. A crooked smile tilts under the hat brim, aimed at the iron latch.

Lampblack ink swallows the cloak whole. Hatched lines comb the timber and the furrowed bark, leaving the blade alone in bone ivory. For lovers of the macabre and dark fairy tales, this black and white art print carries German folklore indoors as gothic vision with country manners.

Origin Story

Fritz-Philipp Schmidt (1869–1945) was a German painter and illustrator who kept faith with Late Romanticism while the century around him changed its clothes. Born in Dresden into a family of artists, he entered the Dresden Academy of Fine Arts in 1885 under Leon Pohle. Munich followed in 1891–92: the Academy of Fine Arts, Paul Hoecker, Ludwig von Löfftz. Then home again, to Hermann Prell's master class.

Fairy tale and verse gave him his pages. In 1897 he published a collection of German fairy tales; in 1902 he illustrated Ferdinand Avenarius's Hausbuch deutscher Lyrik. Across Saxony he dressed churches and chapels in murals and stained glass, carrying his line from page to wall to window. He later moved to Munich, painted Malersleute im Gebirge in 1917, and died in Bayrischzell.

How to Hang your Artwork

1. D-rings (most secure)

Screw a D-ring onto the back of the frame on the left and right, both at the same height. A ruler helps here. Then put two screws in the wall where you want your canvas, level with each other and spaced the same distance apart as the D-rings. A spirit level makes this easier. Finally, hook the D-rings onto the screws.

How to Hang your Artwork

2. Straight onto screws

Keep it simple: put two screws in the wall at the same height and rest the inner lip at the top of the back of the frame on them.
