Two Augsburg women lean toward a convex mirror, and the glass flatters them for one more second. Daniel Hopfer caught that second around 1515. History filed it as Death and the Devil Surprising Two Women, a German Renaissance vanitas etched in lampblack on tallow-cream paper.

Look at what the mirror misses. Behind a netted coif and a link chain fat with merchant money, Death lifts a skull above the taller woman's braided bun and crowns her with her own future. His other hand tilts an hourglass. Sand runs. Her friend in the plumed beret keeps a palm on her shoulder, still admiring the necklace.

Ointment flasks wait on the dressing table. At the balustrade a bristling devil rears on bird claws, a second face leering from his belly. An imp with a spear rides his horns. The city's sumptuary laws rationed chains and velvet by rank, and Hopfer's needle spends ink on every pleat anyway.

Daniel Hopfer's Death and the Devil Surprising Two Women is the Totentanz with the music taken out, a danse macabre shrunk to a single terrace. Hopfer carried etching off the breastplate and onto paper ahead of nearly everyone in the Northern Renaissance. He cross-hatched vanity and rot with equal appetite. But this old master print keeps its memento mori short: a mirror is always the smallest window in the room.

Origin Story

Daniel Hopfer (c. 1470–1536) was the German printmaker who transformed iron and acid into art, pioneering etching as a printmaking medium around 1500. Born in Kaufbeuren and established in Augsburg by 1493, he adapted armor-decorating techniques to create prints on iron plates, establishing the Hopfer style of silhouetted designs against black grounds. His etchings—spanning religious subjects, Landsknechts, and mythological scenes—ranged from line-work to sophisticated multi-bitten compositions that influenced Albrecht Dürer.

The Hopfer family enterprise flourished across three generations, with sons Hieronymus and Lambert carrying the etched tradition to Nuremberg. Though criticized for copying Mantegna, Daniel’s innovation—transferring acid-etched metalwork from sword to paper—established the salability of prints and the publisher business model. His 230 surviving plates, later marked with Funck numbers, remain testaments to Augsburg’s Renaissance ingenuity and the birth of reproducible art.

Framed Art Prints

1. Vertical

Use the sawtooth hanger at the top middle on the back of the frame and hang it on a single screw or nail.

2. Horizontal

Hang the two sawtooth hangers on two screws or nails at the same heightPut two screws or nails in the wall at the same height, spaced the same distance apart as the two sawtooth hangers, then hang your print on them.

Framed Canvas

1. D-rings (most secure)

Screw a D-ring onto the back of the frame on the left and right, both at the same height. A ruler helps here. Then put two screws in the wall where you want your canvas, level with each other and spaced the same distance apart as the D-rings. A spirit level makes this easier. Finally, hook the D-rings onto the screws.

2. Straight onto screws

Keep it simple: put two screws in the wall at the same height and rest the inner lip at the top of the back of the frame on them.
