About This Phone Case
Castle and Village, Jan de Haan's cut-out folk illustration, opens with two geese pinned behind a black dashed fold line, their pink-orange bills lowered toward bare cream ground. This farmyard vignette carries the paper toy-sheet convention of nineteenth-century Dutch paper craft, in which poultry and pasture were printed flat for a child's scissors to free them.
Cross-hatched fence slats climb in olive-green shadow behind the birds, thin black contour lines tracing each feather against the ochre wash ground. Past the fold line, a wood-plank barn tips its shingled roof toward a slate-blue tower rising in the distance. Sage-green hedge patches stitch the seam between farmhouse and fortress, and terracotta roof tile flashes low in the corner where the village properly begins.
