About the Artwork

Castle and Village, Jan de Haan's cut-out folk illustration, opens with two geese pinned behind a black dashed fold line, their pink-orange bills lowered toward bare cream ground. This farmyard vignette carries the paper toy-sheet convention of nineteenth-century Dutch paper craft, in which poultry and pasture were printed flat for a child's scissors to free them.

Cross-hatched fence slats climb in olive-green shadow behind the birds, thin black contour lines tracing each feather against the ochre wash ground. Past the fold line, a wood-plank barn tips its shingled roof toward a slate-blue tower rising in the distance. Sage-green hedge patches stitch the seam between farmhouse and fortress, and terracotta roof tile flashes low in the corner where the village properly begins.

Wrapped snug around your phone, the print on this case keeps its European village architecture intact edge to edge. The cut-out illustrator treating architecture like moveable paper — with your imagination encouraged but foundations optional.
Origin Story

Jan de Haan was a Dutch illustrator whose pictures brought childhood learning to life. Working in color, he filled his prints with scenes of everyday Dutch life — animals underfoot, wildflowers in the garden, quiet domestic moments — turning observation into gentle instruction. His images formed part of a wider series of educational prints made for children, pairing visual pleasure with lessons in the natural world.

De Haan's style stayed clear and unfussy: confident lines, bright saturated color, and enough detail to reward a child's close looking without overwhelming it. That balance of simplicity and warmth made his work an effective teaching tool, and his prints helped shape early Dutch childhood education, using pictures rather than text to teach patience, curiosity, and care for the everyday world.
