About the Artist

Max Beckmann (1884–1950) was a German painter, printmaker, and draftsman whose uncompromising vision redefined modern figurative art. Defying the constraints of Expressionism, he fused brutal realism with mythic grandeur, distilling the chaos of the 20th century into psychologically charged compositions.

His signature triptychs—monumental, fragmented narratives steeped in allegory—stand as some of the most profound meditations on war, exile, and the existential crisis of modernity.

Dismissed by the Nazi regime as "degenerate art," Beckmann fled Germany, first to Amsterdam and later to the United States, where his enigmatic self-portraits, brooding cityscapes, and haunting cabaret scenes profoundly influenced American modernism.
