About the Artwork

Death throws a party here, and José Guadalupe Posada sends out the invitations. He cut this skeleton in 1903 for a penny broadside, and the bony braggart keeps clearing a pile of skulls with one boot in the air.

Follow the lines. Short hatched strokes weave the straw crown of the giant hat, then loosen into the scribbled faces of the mob behind it. Every head is bare bone. A crescent-moon blade swings above the Calaveras Oaxaquena, whose long stride splits the picture in two.

Cheap pulp carried Mexican popular prints such as this to street hawkers in the restless years before the Mexican Revolution. Rich and poor wore one face in his satire. Decades later Diego Rivera painted Posada into his Alameda mural, arm linked with Death in a feathered hat.

Hang this vintage Día de Muertos skeleton art print beside an ofrenda bright with cempasúchil, or above a desk that needs a dash of cheeky rebellion. On tea-stained ivory, the dead get the last word. And the coal-colored ink has kept its punchline for more than a century.

Origin Story

José Guadalupe Posada (1852–1913) was a Mexican printmaker whose macabre humor reshaped how death and politics were drawn. Born in Aguascalientes, he trained as a lithographer and carved his country’s conscience into zinc and bone. His calaveras—grinning skeletons in elegant hats and revolutionary garb—mocked the vanity of elites and the cruelty of power. La Calavera Catrina, his most enduring creation, became Mexico’s skeletal muse, a symbol of mortality and resistance entwined. Posada’s broadsheets, once street ephemera, are now the immortal pulse of Día de los Muertos, echoing his belief that death laughs loudest at the living.
