A Japanese infantryman thrusts into his Russian captive, both bodies tense under the flattened light of Meiji modernity. Flesh meets uniform, discipline unravels into dominance. The fallen rifle marks surrender; the faint army and flag beyond flare like a nation’s erection of power.
Through pigment and pulp, the print collapses violence and pleasure into one act of empire—Japan’s ascendancy carved directly into the body of its foe. The ginger hair and slack jaw of the Russian soldier recall Western caricatures, reduced here to a conquered symbol beneath Japan’s new imperial virility.
