About This Artwork
Hashiguchi Goyo's sashi-e squirrel study takes an expansive view from two little paws lifted toward a nut-shaped mouth. The creature's sage-green body coiled into a comma of concentration. Everything holding still around that single gesture. Forepaws closed tight and whiskers angled forward. The whole sheet built around one squirrel mid-bite.
This Taishō-era book illustration belongs to the same Rinpa-adjacent decorative lineage that flattened woodblock illustration into pattern rather than perspective, and the squirrel sits without a single cast shadow to anchor it in real space. Its bushy tail curls upward like a second question mark, echoing the coral-red maple sprigs scattered above and the cobalt four-petaled blossoms pressed flat against cream washi ground.
Scholars of Meiji-Taishō book design read such creature vignettes as seasonal shorthand, a paw-lifted pause standing in for autumn's turning rather than any told story. Rust-orange mottling bleeds across nearby ochre-gold leaf forms; black brush-stroke kana floats overhead, untethered to the animal's gaze.
