About the Artwork

The tide has drawn back, and two walkers cross ground that was water at high tide. Hugo Backmansson pours lemon yellow into the sky above a cobalt bay and lays the bared sandbar in burnt orange. A figure in a dark cloak leads with a flap of indigo cloth swinging at one side. A white-wrapped walker follows the surf farther out, and broad brown bars cross the shallows in front of them.

Ancient writers said the city on this bay took its name from Tinge, widow of the giant Antaeus, whom Hercules had defeated. Hugo Backmansson paints that shore with the story still unfinished: a lemon-yellow sky, violet hills and a cobalt crescent of water with two small walkers on a bar of burnt-orange sand.

White houses and a squat tower sit on the far shore under violet hills. Foreign legations had stood in Tangier since the early nineteenth century, and this water carried their envoys and goods in. Three blues hold the bay: a pale one near the sand, cobalt in the middle and soft lilac at the horizon.

Backmansson, a former battle painter who spent years in Morocco, drags the brush thin so the canvas weave shows through the swell. The tide leaves this bar bare twice a day, and the walkers use it as a road. Small touches of green mark the scrub along the far shore, and a red roof glints among the whitewashed walls of the village.

Bay of Tangier awaits your bedroom or living room as a Moroccan seaside painting, where a bar of orange sand crosses the blue and the old myth stays open.

Origin Story

Hugo Backmansson (1860–1953) was a Finnish painter who worked with an officer’s discipline and a traveller’s appetite. Born in Pemar, he took lessons from R. W. Ekman, then entered the Finnish Cadet School at Fredrikshamn, publishing Teckningar ur Kadett-Lifvet in 1892. Commissioned into the Ismailov Regiment in St. Petersburg, he studied at the city’s art academy and became the first Finnish-born artist trained as a battle painter.

Two journeys to Morocco, in 1907 and 1939, produced portraits and watercolour studies, among them Man of Marrakech (1909), now in the Ateneum collection. Back in Finland after independence, he painted group portraits, notably 12 Ophthalmologists, held by the University of Helsinki. His work also appears in the Amos Anderson Art Museum and the Gösta Serlachius Museum, pairing a soldier’s steady eye with a wanderer’s hunger for sunlight.
