About this Artwork
John La Farge's Autumn Scattering Leaves (1900) summons a winged psyche-figure poised at a still pool, her olive drapery slipping at the hip while moth wings of hazel and bone fan from her shoulders. Carrying the tawny eyespots of a Cecropia, that nocturnal traveler La Farge studied with a naturalist's patience.
La Farge, the American Symbolist who married Aesthetic Movement refinement to Hudson School devotion, paints her in profile against a Prussian wash darkened by autumn vapor. Cadmium maples spin loose from grape-laden vines, their crimson curling mid-fall.
Gilded Age America had little patience for reverie, yet here the painter bends watercolor toward myth, his pigment pooled in the manner of opaline stained glass. Russet hair, ochre underwash, the soft purple knot at her waist — every color holds the seasonal surrender where her foot meets its quiet reflection.
