Late autumn in Kyoto has a ritual called momijigari, the hunt for turning leaves. Kamisaka Sekka folds that whole outing into one sheet of A Thousand Grasses. His Autumn Hills climb left to right like a walker gaining height, each verdigris rise crowned with momiji.

Malachite hills swell in soft humps. Their edges fade through bokashi gradation, the printer's damp-brush trick that lets color woodblock ink thin out like weather. Japanese maple leaves crowd each ridge in cinnabar and persimmon. A few slate-teal clusters hold on to summer. Low left, gnarled trunks wade through shell-pink ground with crowns lost in white.

Look close at the foliage. Vermilion stars sit beside amber ones, and every cluster is edged in hairline cuts made by woodblock carvers on cherry planks. Deep spruce patches interrupt the blaze. Below them a cream fog erases the valley, so the twisted boughs seem to float on apricot paper.

Heian court poets saw Tatsuta's maples as brocade, a hillside dyed like silk. Sekka answers them in the flat, bold idiom of the Rinpa revival. Chigusa appeared one year before his 1901 voyage to Glasgow, where Art Nouveau was waiting. Here the Meiji designer is still listening to his own city. And this Japanese maple art print brings that listening indoors. Give it a quiet wall and watch the hills keep climbing.

Origin Story

Kamisaka Sekka, born in 1866 in Kyoto, was the visionary who revived the Rinpa school, blending traditional Japanese motifs with bold, modern design. His art transcended mere decoration, capturing the essence of nature with a vibrant, almost ethereal touch.

Sekka honored the legacy of Rinpa masters like Ogata Kōrin, while daring to innovate—his works were a dynamic mix of reverence and rebellion. His colors were bold, his patterns intricate, each piece a dance between tradition and modernity.

Sekka’s influence, from textiles to ceramics, reshaped Japanese culture, embodying a timeless balance between innovation and the beauty of tradition.

Framed Art Prints

1. Vertical

Use the sawtooth hanger at the top middle on the back of the frame and hang it on a single screw or nail.

2. Horizontal

Hang the two sawtooth hangers on two screws or nails at the same heightPut two screws or nails in the wall at the same height, spaced the same distance apart as the two sawtooth hangers, then hang your print on them.

Framed Canvas

1. D-rings (most secure)

Screw a D-ring onto the back of the frame on the left and right, both at the same height. A ruler helps here. Then put two screws in the wall where you want your canvas, level with each other and spaced the same distance apart as the D-rings. A spirit level makes this easier. Finally, hook the D-rings onto the screws.

2. Straight onto screws

Keep it simple: put two screws in the wall at the same height and rest the inner lip at the top of the back of the frame on them.
