Artwork Description
A cathedral of sea-bodies opens across black ink. Haeckel’s Ascidiae assemble like diagrams of a submerged mythology, each tunicate flaring in chromatic dialects—saffron, cerulean, vermilion. The sessile forms curl inward with anatomical intricacy: cloacal and buccal siphons ringed like ritual seals; translucent bodies veined with radial symmetry; gelatinous lobes armored in cellulose tunics.
Every structure breathes with urochordate logic—marine invertebrates moored to reef, to rock, to biological history. Haeckel paints their physiology with almost ecclesiastic precision: gut loops cradled in fleshy sacs, pharyngeal baskets layered in visual rhythm, colonial ascidians blooming in encrusting mosaics. Each organism is an essay in adaptation—hemichordate relatives dressed as sea chrysanthemums, vertebrate cousins in pre-chordate costume.
