Reijer Stolk's Anatomical Study of a Man's Muscles strips the human form to its structural argument: a jet-black silhouette torso, headless, handless, turning mid-stride as though caught between dissection theater and life class. Created between 1906 and 1945 within Amsterdam's tradition of applied arts education, this Dutch anatomical illustration works as both pedagogical document and radical graphic object.

White contour lines score the surface — serratus anterior fanning across the ribcage, oblique muscles stacked in diagonal registers, quadriceps parceled into numbered anatomical zones that climb from hip to thigh. The flat lithographic ink refuses depth; there is no chiaroscuro softening, no flesh-toned luminosity, only the clean authority of the diagrammatic muscle study.

What arrests is the tension between clinical precision and the body's unmistakable kinetic charge — this torso does not merely stand, it strains, its contrapostal rotation carrying the urgency of a figure study pressed into the cold grammar of scientific illustration, where each numbered cell answers to a catalogue entry still out of sight.

Origin Story

Reijer Stolk, born in 1896 in the Dutch East Indies, was an artist whose diverse talents bridged cultures and artistic mediums.

After relocating to the Netherlands, Stolk became a leading figure in the Haarlem School, known for his contributions to photography, painting, sculpture, and graphic design.

His work transformed the European art scene with Indonesian influences, blending tropical roots with Dutch modernism. Stolk's anatomical studies elevated the human form to high art, while his innovations in batik merged Javanese traditions with contemporary design.

Stolk's legacy endures as a testament to creativity that transcends borders and unites cultures.

How to Hang your Artwork

1. D-rings (most secure)

Screw a D-ring onto the back of the frame on the left and right, both at the same height. A ruler helps here. Then put two screws in the wall where you want your canvas, level with each other and spaced the same distance apart as the D-rings. A spirit level makes this easier. Finally, hook the D-rings onto the screws.

How to Hang your Artwork

2. Straight onto screws

Keep it simple: put two screws in the wall at the same height and rest the inner lip at the top of the back of the frame on them.
