About this Artwork
Reijer Stolk's Anatomical Study of a Man's Back and Butt Muscles turns the body away from the viewer and reveals more. The posterior silhouette rises in dense lithographic black, the flexed right arm raised behind the skull throwing the biceps and triceps into the composition's apex while the back fans downward — trapezius, rhomboid mass, teres major — each group bounded by white contour line work incised across the flat ink field.
This Dutch early twentieth-century scientific illustration carries a numbered zone system from 1 to 36, the white numerals distributed across latissimus dorsi sweeps, erector spinae columns, gluteus maximus curves, and descending hamstring cells with the quiet authority of an anatomical atlas that has shed every decorative ambition.
What Stolk understood — and what separates this posterior figure study from the crowded tradition of academic back studies — is that the rear view strips posturing from the body entirely. The figure cannot perform for you. It simply loads weight into the flexed arm, tilts the spine, and lets the posterior musculature diagram carry its own argument in lampblack and ruled white line.
