Edward Penfield's American Football Player, 1907, catches its subject at the hinge-point — crouched wide, fingers splayed against olive-khaki padded trousers, every pound of him aimed at whatever comes next.
Penfield, who remade American poster art through his decade at Harper's Monthly, applies his Japonisme-trained flat lithographic color plane to the gridiron's new mythology: a dark brown canvas vest buttons over padded leather shoulder armor, scarlet-red jersey sleeves reaching the wrist, red stockings grounding the stance in the tan-ochre ground's warmth.
Straw-yellow hair swept back from that sharp-angled face. Parted lips, that upward-left gaze reading the line — not a portrait of calm but of split-second calculation rendered in ink contour with the economy of a woodblock master.
