About This Artwork
Charles Allan Gilbert’s All is Vanity bends perception into allegory. A woman sits before her mirror, bottles arranged across a polished surface, hair piled in Edwardian fashion. Yet distance collapses her reflection and the round frame into the unmistakable outline of a skull.
This iconic memento mori, first published in 1892, captured the late-Victorian fixation with illusion, mortality, and vanity as sin. Fine lines soften into shadow, light bleeds through satin folds, and the mirrored double insists that beauty is fleeting, flesh perishable.
On your phone, the case becomes both ornament and reminder: an everyday portal into turn-of-the-century illustration, American Symbolism, and the enduring fascination with life balanced precariously against death.
