Charles Allan Gilbert’s All is Vanity bends perception into allegory. A woman sits before her mirror, bottles arranged across a polished surface, hair piled in Edwardian fashion. Yet distance collapses her reflection and the round frame into the unmistakable outline of a skull.
This iconic memento mori, first published in 1892, captured the late-Victorian fixation with illusion, mortality, and vanity as sin. Fine lines soften into shadow, light bleeds through satin folds, and the mirrored double insists that beauty is fleeting, flesh perishable.
