About the Artwork
Hold on to the cask. In A Descent into the Maelstrom, Harry Clarke drops you to the lip of the Moskstraumen, where the sea off Norway’s Lofoten Islands opens into a throat. Pen and ink spin outward in bone-white dashes. Jet black swallows everything else.
Below, a Norwegian fishing smack clings to the funnel wall. Two matchstick figures stand aboard. Splintered wreckage rides the current above them, timber drowned years before you arrived. Clarke, an Irish stained glass artist trained in his father’s Dublin studio, leaded each ring of water into place until the spiral tightens stroke by stroke.
This image comes from the 1919 Harrap edition of Edgar Allan Poe’s Tales of Mystery and Imagination, a black and white plate cut in the Golden Age of illustration. Gothic horror made optical. Poe’s fisherman survived the plunge and walked home with hair gone white overnight.
Now the whirlpool wraps your phone case. Thumb on glass. Each time the screen wakes, the vortex turns once more and the little boat holds.
