A Descent into the Maelstrom - Harry Clarke Art Print
Couldn't load pickup availability
Harry Clarke gives the sea a throat. A Descent into the Maelstrom spins down the page in rings of India ink, each band thinner as the funnel tightens. Edgar Allan Poe set this whirlpool off Norway’s Lofoten coast in 1841. Clarke drew it in Dublin for George G. Harrap’s 1919 Tales of Mystery and Imagination.
Find the fishing smack first. It clings to the left wall, masts snapped to stumps. Poe leaves one brother aboard. Lower right, the other has tied himself to a water cask and jumped. He is a knot of bone white, clamped to the staves.
Poe’s Norwegian fisherman noticed that barrels sink slowest. Clarke gives that cold arithmetic a body. The cask rides the wide outer bands. Deeper in, the boat slides toward a pinhole of ebony black.
This pen and ink illustration came from a stained glass artist who made lampblack hold light. Hang this gothic art print and the wall starts turning. By the next day, Poe says, the survivor’s raven hair had gone the color of foam.

Framed Art Prints

1. Vertical
Use the sawtooth hanger at the top middle on the back of the frame and hang it on a single screw or nail.

2. Horizontal
Hang the two sawtooth hangers on two screws or nails at the same heightPut two screws or nails in the wall at the same height, spaced the same distance apart as the two sawtooth hangers, then hang your print on them.

Framed Canvas

1. D-rings (most secure)
Screw a D-ring onto the back of the frame on the left and right, both at the same height. A ruler helps here. Then put two screws in the wall where you want your canvas, level with each other and spaced the same distance apart as the D-rings. A spirit level makes this easier. Finally, hook the D-rings onto the screws.

2. Straight onto screws
Keep it simple: put two screws in the wall at the same height and rest the inner lip at the top of the back of the frame on them.
