About the Artwork

Twelve degrees of Morocco arrive on a camel. The label puts a rider in a long pale cloak on the animal against a red field, and the dunes behind them roll in soft folds. Heavy condensed capitals across the top name the country, and 12° stands at the right. The 12° is a measure Joseph Louis Gay-Lussac devised in the 1820s, and it counts the parts of alcohol in every hundred of the bottle.

Under the French Protectorate, which ran from 1912 to 1956, vineyards spread across the plains around Meknès, and their bottles needed a label that sold the country at a glance. The 12° marks the alcohol strength, set at the rider's shoulder height in the same dark ink as the lettering above.

The ink lies flat in vermilion and black with the paper left bare for highlights. Nothing blends or shades. The condensed type and clean silhouettes follow the Art Deco habit of letting one image sell a whole bottle.

Vin du Maroc 12° awaits your kitchen or dining room as a vintage wine label graphic art vision, where a lone rider crosses a field of red above your table.

Origin Story

Morocco holds the best natural potential for quality wine in North Africa, its high mountains and the cooling Atlantic tempering the heat. Phoenician settlers are believed to have introduced the vine, Rome established it, French colonists planted it at scale, making Morocco a major exporter between 1912 and 1955. European Economic Community quotas in 1967 and state control of vineyards from 1973 to 1984 saw many vines grubbed up.

Foreign investment, chiefly French, revived the industry from the 1990s, with Bordeaux houses leasing vineyards long-term from the state company SODEA. Production reached about 400,000 hectolitres in 2013, making Morocco the Arab world’s second-largest producer after Algeria and employing up to 20,000 people. Red dominates at over 75 percent, led by Cinsaut, Carignan, Alicante and Grenache, with Syrah, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon rising. Taferielt remains an indigenous Moroccan grape.
