About the Artwork
Rousseau stitches carnage into paradise with The Repast of the Lion. His 1907 oil stages a kill within an invented jungle: palm fronds feathering outward in malachite layers, thin trunks rising like organ pipes through teal mist. The lion—rufous mane catching filtered light—grips the spotted body of its prey, crimson pooling against rosette-marked fur.
The French naive master built tropical worlds without passport or passage, sourcing flora from Paris's botanical glass houses and fauna from illustrated journals. His flattened perspective denies depth, stacking leaf against leaf in a frieze of verdant theater.
A cobalt flower punctuates the dense foliage—a single bolt of ultramarine improbability. The palette moves through forest olive, moss undertone, and warm biscuit-hued pelage, shadow falling in cool blue-green strokes. Rousseau's primitive vision distills the food chain into stillness, the raw act of survival wrapped in botanical dreamscape.
