In The Princess Burns the Ifrit to Death, Edmund Dulac stops an Arabian Nights fight one heartbeat from its end.

She falls headfirst out of the top corner. The Efrite is already upside down. Her robe is madder rose, crowded with ink-fine arabesques and cut by a chartreuse sash. The Toulouse-born illustrator gave her an Art Nouveau outline, wire-thin against aubergine haze. Two ribbons of saffron flame run from her spread hands into the fire jinn below. He tumbles. His claws open on nothing, verdigris skin beaded with pale rings.

Dulac worked in watercolor and gouache, stippling pigment until the indigo night held the grain of soot. Persian miniature painting taught him this flat, jeweled space, and the plunging diagonal comes straight off a Japanese woodblock print. Hodder & Stoughton published it in Sindbad the Sailor in 1914, late in the Golden Age of Illustration.

A basin swirls with coral reflections. The Story of the Three Calenders says the sorceress princess wins and burns with her enemy. This vintage art print holds her mid-dive, a fairy tale heroine still choosing the cost.

Origin Story

Edmund Dulac (1882–1953) was a French-British illustrator who rendered the Golden Age of Illustration in watercolour, gold and moonlight. Born Edmond Dulac in Toulouse, he abandoned law for the École des Beaux-Arts and a brief spell at the Académie Julian in Paris, settling in London in 1904. J. M. Dent commissioned the Brontë sisters’ novels; the Leicester Galleries and Hodder & Stoughton followed with lavish annual gift books.

Stories from the Arabian Nights, The Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam, Stories from Hans Christian Andersen and Edgar Allan Poe’s The Bells glow with jewel-toned washes and flattened, patterned space indebted to Persian miniature painting. Rival to Arthur Rackham and collaborator with W. B. Yeats on Nō-inspired theatre, he later designed costumes, banknotes for Free France and British postage stamps. He died in London, midway through Milton’s Comus.

How to Hang your Artwork

1. D-rings (most secure)

Screw a D-ring onto the back of the frame on the left and right, both at the same height. A ruler helps here. Then put two screws in the wall where you want your canvas, level with each other and spaced the same distance apart as the D-rings. A spirit level makes this easier. Finally, hook the D-rings onto the screws.

How to Hang your Artwork

2. Straight onto screws

Keep it simple: put two screws in the wall at the same height and rest the inner lip at the top of the back of the frame on them.
