She holds a Rococo sitter’s pose, shoulder dropped and profile offered. Then the eye travels down. Dissection of a Woman’s Back opens under her nape where a gown should fasten, and carmine muscle slides off both shoulder blades with the weight of unlaced brocade.

L’Ange anatomique wears its muscle outward. Jacques Fabien Gautier Dagoty engraved the trapezius folded aside in two rust red sheets, and the larger one flares off her left shoulder with the lift of a wing mid-beat.

Four copper plates built her. Each was rocked to a velvet burr and inked in a single pigment, a color mezzotint method Gautier Dagoty carried out of Le Blon’s workshop and guarded under royal privilege. The anatomist Duverney prepared the cadaver for the Myologie complète. Ivory ribs ladder down her opened trunk, set against an olive-umber ground, toward flesh-toned hips where the scalpel stopped.

Her chignon stays pinned under an ash-blue ribbon. The Surrealists adopted her two centuries later, and the nickname The Anatomical Angel has clung to this écorché ever since. Enlightenment anatomical illustration rarely kept its manners this well. This medical art print turns its back on the room, skinned to the ribs and glancing over one shoulder.

Origin Story

Jacques Fabien Gautier d'Agoty (1711–1786) was the French anatomist, painter, and printmaker who helped carry colour engraving into France. Born in Marseille, he trained under Jacob Christoph Le Blon, inventor of the first full-colour printing process, then claimed his own improved four-plate method using black. With his sons, he popularised the technique and published a colour-illustrated journal. Elected to the Académie des Sciences, Arts et Belles-Lettres de Dijon, he is best remembered for collaborating with the anatomist Guichard Joseph Duverney on the Myologie complète en couleur et grandeur naturelle (1746), whose tendons and veins stand out in "horrible precision."

With his sons, he also produced the "French Gallery" and "Universal Gallery" of notable portraits (1770, 1772). He died in Paris.

How to Hang your Artwork

1. D-rings (most secure)

Screw a D-ring onto the back of the frame on the left and right, both at the same height. A ruler helps here. Then put two screws in the wall where you want your canvas, level with each other and spaced the same distance apart as the D-rings. A spirit level makes this easier. Finally, hook the D-rings onto the screws.

How to Hang your Artwork

2. Straight onto screws

Keep it simple: put two screws in the wall at the same height and rest the inner lip at the top of the back of the frame on them.
