About the Artist

William Morris (1834–1896) was a visionary English designer, poet, and socialist activist, whose profound influence on the Arts and Crafts movement reshaped British decorative arts, interior design, and modern fantasy literature. Rejecting industrial mass production, Morris championed handcrafted textiles, medieval-inspired patterns, and artisanal bookmaking, reviving traditional British textile arts, wallpaper design, and stained glass craftsmanship. He co-founded Morris, Marshall, Faulkner & Co. (later Morris & Co.), a firm that defined Victorian interior decoration, producing intricate floral motifs, botanical wallpaper, and handwoven tapestries that remain iconic today.

A literary polymath, Morris translated Icelandic sagas, penned utopian socialist fiction like News from Nowhere, and was instrumental in early socialist movements, founding the Socialist League in 1884. His passion for historic preservation led to the creation of the Society for the Protection of Ancient Buildings, ensuring the survival of medieval architecture. In 1891, he established the Kelmscott Press, crafting exquisitely printed books that influenced modern typography and fine press publishing. Morris’s organic textile prints, illuminated manuscripts, and socially conscious design ethos continue to inspire artists, designers, and scholars worldwide.
