Round sedge hats, kasa woven for travel and battle alike, crown each of their heads. Inside a single cartouche sits one carved kanji, a clan mark identifying rank within this scattered procession.
Bare toes grip invisible ground as long bo staffs cut diagonal lines skyward, hands wrapped tight near the tip. Rust-brown foxing stains bloom near two brims, proof of paper aged across two centuries since the block first met ink. Cross-hatching builds shadow into sleeve and shin, a carving technique demanding steady hands and patient knives.
No border frames these men; the composition spills past its edges, restless, still running somewhere past the paper's cut margin, samurai caught between one Edo street and the next.
