Red Birds on a Branch - Katsushika Hokusai Art Print
Couldn't load pickup availability
Katsushika Hokusai set two birds mid-perch across a sheet from his 1814 Album of Sketches, ink still carrying a working hand's pressure. Laid on by brush rather than block. A working method Hokusai kept for private nature study even as his printmaking output grew.
A rust-red breast catches pale Edo-period paper like a coal pressed against ash. The upper bird cranes a barred, slate-blue crest toward a branch tip, red bill parted, one orange-red claw curled around bark drawn in a few economical strokes. Charcoal-gray plumage darkens along the tail into near-black, built through layered mineral pigment instead of heavy outline.
Below, the higher bird's mirror bends the same shape into profile, a blue cheek patch giving way to a crown barred in crimson, the belly speckled rose against cream underfeather. Spiked olive leaves cut the composition in jagged ink washes, a naturalist's shorthand rather than a botanical record.
This is sketchbook Hokusai, decades before his prints reached wide audiences, testing weight and balance on cheap paper meant for study. Hung plain, unframed, the pairing reads as two Edo-period birds fixed mid-glance, caught between one branch and the next.

Framed Art Prints

1. Vertical
Use the sawtooth hanger at the top middle on the back of the frame and hang it on a single screw or nail.

2. Horizontal
Hang the two sawtooth hangers on two screws or nails at the same heightPut two screws or nails in the wall at the same height, spaced the same distance apart as the two sawtooth hangers, then hang your print on them.

Framed Canvas

1. D-rings (most secure)
Screw a D-ring onto the back of the frame on the left and right, both at the same height. A ruler helps here. Then put two screws in the wall where you want your canvas, level with each other and spaced the same distance apart as the D-rings. A spirit level makes this easier. Finally, hook the D-rings onto the screws.

2. Straight onto screws
Keep it simple: put two screws in the wall at the same height and rest the inner lip at the top of the back of the frame on them.
