Oannes surfaces with his eyes shut. In Odilon Redon's 1896 lithograph, the Babylonian fish god wears a human face inside a finned hood, and a pearl-gray disc swells behind his head. He has no shoulders. A ribbed tail takes over and loops around a hole of tar-black.

Europe had met this Chaldean sea deity in stone. By 1850, Austen Henry Layard's diggers were hauling carved sages in fish-skin cloaks from Nimrud's mounds. Gustave Flaubert borrowed one for an 1874 fever dream about a desert monk. Redon's Symbolism answered with a face nobody had carved.

Flaubert gave him the caption. In The Temptation of Saint Anthony, old gods parade past a starving hermit, and this one brags that he was the first consciousness in Chaos. He rose from the abyss to harden matter and determine forms. Berossus, a priest of Babylon, told it first. A fish-man walked out of the sea and taught people to write.

Redon drew that boast as sleep. Two milk-white spots blink from the fins, stray eyes left over from a world still unsorted. Ambroise Vollard published the portfolio in Paris, and plate 14 holds the quietest monster of the third series. This French Symbolist art print stops a creation myth mid-sentence. The coil tightens, and the dark waits to be told what shape to take.

Origin Story

Odilon Redon (1840–1916) was a visionary French artist whose haunting and luminous works bridged Symbolism and Post-Impressionism, laying foundations for Surrealism.

Born in Bordeaux, Redon began his career crafting enigmatic charcoal drawings and lithographs, termed his noirs, which captured dreamlike, symbolic worlds.

Influenced by Eastern philosophy, Japanese aesthetics, and literary symbolism, Redon later embraced radiant pastels and oils, producing vibrant, mystical images that resonated with imagination and inner contemplation.

From his introspective portraits and ethereal floral arrangements to mythological visions, Redon transformed art into poetic meditations, ensuring his enduring legacy as one of modern art’s most evocative masters.

How to Hang your Artwork

1. D-rings (most secure)

Screw a D-ring onto the back of the frame on the left and right, both at the same height. A ruler helps here. Then put two screws in the wall where you want your canvas, level with each other and spaced the same distance apart as the D-rings. A spirit level makes this easier. Finally, hook the D-rings onto the screws.

How to Hang your Artwork

2. Straight onto screws

Keep it simple: put two screws in the wall at the same height and rest the inner lip at the top of the back of the frame on them.
