Somebody has dealt this bedroom face up. Heart cards fan out under a rope of pearls and a ring. Over them a crowned queen of hearts grins from her narrow panel, her throat drawn out to a stem.

She is a shop-window mannequin in burnt sienna, bald and long-necked, two breasts stacked inside a lamp-black strap. One leg kicks at the ceiling. Her ear has wandered off wearing its earring, and a braided ochre toque hovers above a skull too smooth to hold it. Carmine lips wait in a saffron triangle. Behind her spreads a viridian dress form, the one unbroken body on the premises.

To the right, still life turns vanitas. Aubergine grapes crowd a copper decanter that wears a crown, and an alizarin rose stays within its frame. A cob of corn rests beside one orange. Through a slatted blind comes a strip of Prussian blue night.

Howard Taft Lorenz built Mlle Modiste for the New Deal’s easel division in 1930s Manhattan, and the surface holds its decisions. Soot and peacock teal lie in thin scumbles. Flaked pigment opens onto ivory ground. Social Surrealists were turning hunger into dreams that decade, and here that hunger gets a boudoir. Near the floor a card shows one high-heeled shoe, its bow tied, waiting for a foot.

Origin Story

Howard Taft Lorenz (1906–1956) was an American painter whose entire career fits inside five feverish WPA years. Working for the Federal Art Project in New York City from 1935 to 1940, he painted Depression-era life with a folk-inflected directness, at once deadpan and tender: domestic interiors, smoke-curled poets, the bureaucratic limbo of the Home Relief Bureau. Fellow WPA painter Perkins Harnly remembered him as outlandish, a bohemian whose life rivalled his canvases for strangeness.

His best-known painting, Dismissal (1940), captures his friend Fred Becker receiving a WPA pink slip; it later graced Smithsonian Magazine’s October 1979 cover. Ten oils, including The Poet and Mlle Modiste, belong to the Smithsonian American Art Museum. He died in Los Angeles in 1956, decades before that acclaim. Rare survivors such as Happy Birthday Gramma (1939) carry American Scene painting’s sly, intimate pulse.

How to Hang your Artwork

1. D-rings (most secure)

Screw a D-ring onto the back of the frame on the left and right, both at the same height. A ruler helps here. Then put two screws in the wall where you want your canvas, level with each other and spaced the same distance apart as the D-rings. A spirit level makes this easier. Finally, hook the D-rings onto the screws.

How to Hang your Artwork

2. Straight onto screws

Keep it simple: put two screws in the wall at the same height and rest the inner lip at the top of the back of the frame on them.
