He lounges, one hand on his hip, a man about to tell a joke. Master IAM of Zwolle cut this Memento Mori into copper in the late 15th century, and the skeleton in a niche has been mid-sentence ever since. Above him an empty banderole loops through cross-hatched, peat-smoke shadow. Nobody lettered it. The speech scroll waits for your line.

Lean into the Netherlandish engraving and your host gets ruder. One worm lifts its head from an eye socket. A second slides between the teeth and knots into a figure eight. Vellum-tan skin clings to his ribs in scalloped rags, and a toad squats in the opened belly. One shin kicks straight up, five toes fanned.

Late Gothic chapels carved corpses this way on transi tombs. A burin shrank the warning to a page any Hanseatic merchant could pocket, and this macabre art print brings it to your wall. The burial shroud spills over the stone ledge in hard folds. One bony hand grips it, a sleeper guarding his blanket.

Origin Story

Master I. A. M. of Zwolle was an anonymous Netherlandish goldsmith and engraver active c. 1470–1490, whose monogram, sometimes joined by the word Zwolle, is cut into his copper plates. Beside the initials sits a tiny goldsmith’s drill, once mistaken for a weaver’s shuttle. Scholars link the hand to the Zwolle painter Johan van den Minnesten or the goldsmith Johannes Ludolphi, yet no document settles it. Only twenty-six engravings survive, among them The Mount of Calvary and Saint Christopher on Horseback.

Early sheets carry the measured piety of Rogier van der Weyden and the clean line of Martin Schongauer. Around 1485 the burin hardens: drapery breaks into broad planes like wood sculpture, prompting speculation that some prints record lost reliefs. In The Betrayal of Christ, soldiers’ faces curdle toward the grotesque, close kin to Hieronymus Bosch.

How to Hang your Artwork

1. D-rings (most secure)

Screw a D-ring onto the back of the frame on the left and right, both at the same height. A ruler helps here. Then put two screws in the wall where you want your canvas, level with each other and spaced the same distance apart as the D-rings. A spirit level makes this easier. Finally, hook the D-rings onto the screws.

2. Straight onto screws

Keep it simple: put two screws in the wall at the same height and rest the inner lip at the top of the back of the frame on them.
