This vintage magic poster left the Calvert Litho Co. presses in Detroit in 1892. In its chromolithograph glow, a magician pulling roses out of a top hat tips the silk brim and lets coral and blush blooms pour toward the footlights. He is bald and narrow-eyed. His waxed mustache and pointed goatee borrow the Mephistopheles look Alexander Herrmann made famous on Gilded Age stages.

The tailcoat opens on an oxblood lining, and its collar climbs past his ears in soot-black spikes. Behind him glows a flat slab of apricot light. Each tone was drawn in greasy crayon on its own limestone block, so every petal still carries the grain of the stone.

Then the supernatural beings crowd in. A cinnabar imp crouches at stage right and flicks aces across the floor, one ivory die tumbling after them. Bats ride the smoke. By his elbow an Aladdin lamp burns on a grinning skull, a memento mori working as stage furniture. Its bistre smoke lifts three bats toward the rafters. Above him a witch on a broomstick cuts past a sickle moon in petrol-blue dark, and beneath her a brick-red devil deals playing cards onto the boards.

Victorian stage magic sold its flowers with brimstone waiting in the wings. Spiritualism had filled American parlors with table-rapping, and sleight of hand answered from the stage. Here and now, the magician's hat is still pouring secrets.

Origin Story

The Calvert Lithographing Company (1863–1970) was a commercial printing firm that transformed American visual culture through vibrant color lithography. Founded by Thomas Calvert in Detroit, the company pioneered chromatic advertising from its Michigan headquarters, mastering multi-stone color printing by 1866. Their presses produced dazzling ephemera: bird's-eye city views, theatrical portraits, seed catalogs, circus banners, and product labels that defined Victorian commercial aesthetics. Calvert's craftsmen translated oil paintings into luminous prints, creating panoramic urban vistas that circulated widely.

For a century, the firm balanced artistic ambition with industrial scale, serving America's consumer culture until Chicago investors acquired it in 1950. In 1970, the company merged into Canadian printing conglomerate Lawson & Jones, closing Detroit's graphic arts chapter. Today, Calvert's surviving posters and prints reside in public domain archives, their saturated hues capturing Gilded Age optimism.

Framed Art Prints

1. Vertical

Use the sawtooth hanger at the top middle on the back of the frame and hang it on a single screw or nail.

2. Horizontal

Hang the two sawtooth hangers on two screws or nails at the same heightPut two screws or nails in the wall at the same height, spaced the same distance apart as the two sawtooth hangers, then hang your print on them.

Framed Canvas

1. D-rings (most secure)

Screw a D-ring onto the back of the frame on the left and right, both at the same height. A ruler helps here. Then put two screws in the wall where you want your canvas, level with each other and spaced the same distance apart as the D-rings. A spirit level makes this easier. Finally, hook the D-rings onto the screws.

2. Straight onto screws

Keep it simple: put two screws in the wall at the same height and rest the inner lip at the top of the back of the frame on them.
