Harry Clarke hangs Little Thumb Returned high in a jet-black sky. The messenger is matchstick-small. He owns every inch of it. A rolled dispatch rides his shoulder, fresh from the king’s army two hundred leagues off.
Clarke dressed him for the errand. His hat is a drum with a sprig trailing off its crown, and twin strings of pinhead beads whip back from his collar. The stolen seven-league boots climb past his knees, cuffed and needle-toed. Tufts flare at each heel.
The kingdom waits in miniature along the bottom edge. Chalk-white hatching roughs out three peaks, and a road bends past stippled cypress under a castle pennant. Summits bristle with short ruled strokes. Dotted evergreens line a pale switchback, and a rampart of crosshatched stone flies a banner the wind has shaped into a flame.
