In Let the Tricky Black Bear Do His Dance, Edward S. Curtis catches a masked figure in bearskin mid-howl, snout tipped skyward, jaw cracked open on a cry this sepia photograph can only imagine. Black bear hide slides off the shoulders in heavy folds. It drags like a shadow too heavy to lift.

Curtis spent seasons among the Kwakwaka’wakw of Vancouver Island in the 1910s, people he called Kwakiutl in The North American Indian. Canada had outlawed the potlatch in 1885. Indigenous winter ceremonial life on the Pacific Northwest Coast carried on, in smoky houses and before his lens. Two wooden chests sit roped behind the figure. Gifts once traveled in boxes like these.

Pictorialist photography melts the scene into burnt umber and smoke-gray haze. Grit glints like spilled teeth. One pale claw hooks the ground. As vintage photography and Native American art, this print carries a banned winter into a modern room, where a man wearing a bear still roars at a sky of ash.

Origin Story

Edward Sherriff Curtis (1868–1952) was the American photographer and ethnologist, called the "Shadow Catcher," who raced to record Native American life before it vanished. Born near Whitewater, Wisconsin, and raised in Minnesota and Seattle, he left school in the sixth grade, built his own camera, and apprenticed in St. Paul. His 1895 portrait of Princess Angeline, daughter of Chief Seattle, was his first. Backed by J. P. Morgan with $75,000, he produced The North American Indian: twenty volumes, some 40,000 photographs of eighty tribes, and over 10,000 wax-cylinder recordings of language and song.

He made In the Land of the Head Hunters (1914), the first feature film cast entirely with Indigenous North Americans. Buried in debt, he died in Los Angeles in 1952.

How to Hang your Artwork

1. D-rings (most secure)

Screw a D-ring onto the back of the frame on the left and right, both at the same height. A ruler helps here. Then put two screws in the wall where you want your canvas, level with each other and spaced the same distance apart as the D-rings. A spirit level makes this easier. Finally, hook the D-rings onto the screws.

How to Hang your Artwork

2. Straight onto screws

Keep it simple: put two screws in the wall at the same height and rest the inner lip at the top of the back of the frame on them.
