Two glasses meet over a saffron sky, and Hell picks up the tab. Kellar Toasting the Devil catches Harry Kellar in 1899 with a fist on his hip, a conjurer in a jet tailcoat sharing sherry with Mephistopheles. The fiend keeps his back to us. His persimmon cowl curls to a point above a brim banded in soot, and a gloved hand hoists the first glass.

Kellar’s whole Faustian bargain fits inside a stemmed coupe. Victorian audiences loved a magician rumored to keep company below, so the Strobridge Lithographing Company of Cincinnati printed the rumor in color. Slate-winged bats wheel overhead. Teal imps wave pitchforks from the margins, stagehands waiting for a cue.

Every tint in this color lithograph came off its own limestone slab. A grease crayon laid the ivory shirtfront down in grains. A Library of Congress deposit stamp from June 1899 still marks the buff margin. This vintage magic poster art print brings fin-de-siècle stage magic to the wall above your bar cart, and the devil looks delighted with his end.

Origin Story

Harry Kellar (1849–1922), born Heinrich Keller to German immigrants in Erie, Pennsylvania, was the American illusionist hailed as the "Dean of American Magicians" and the celebrated predecessor of Harry Houdini. Apprenticed to the magician Isaiah Hughes, "the Fakir of Ava," at twelve, he ran away from home at ten and spent a lifetime touring five continents. His grand stage spectacles—the "Levitation of Princess Karnac," the "Nested Boxes," the "Vanishing Lamp"—astonished audiences from Mexico to Rio de Janeiro, where he performed before Emperor Dom Pedro II.

A master of misdirection, he faced ruin in a Bay of Biscay shipwreck, then rebuilt his fortune. Rival to Alexander Herrmann, he retired in 1908, naming Howard Thurston his successor. Houdini later coaxed him back for one final triumph.

How to Hang your Artwork

1. D-rings (most secure)

Screw a D-ring onto the back of the frame on the left and right, both at the same height. A ruler helps here. Then put two screws in the wall where you want your canvas, level with each other and spaced the same distance apart as the D-rings. A spirit level makes this easier. Finally, hook the D-rings onto the screws.

2. Straight onto screws

Keep it simple: put two screws in the wall at the same height and rest the inner lip at the top of the back of the frame on them.
