Arnold Genthe climbed onto this windswept rise in 1908 and caught a family of Japanese Pine Trees mid-argument with the sea wind. The trunks lean and fork. One pair twists together at the waist, bark gone pale as driftwood in the silver gelatin tones of this vintage photography art print.
Above, the canopies spread in flat charcoal shelves. Each clump of needles sits on its branch where a bonsai master would place it. Nature got there first. Behind them a pewter sky presses down on a hazy ridge of hills.
A strip of bright water flashes between the trunks, the coastal edge of Meiji era Japan caught on a glass plate negative. Small pines crowd the far shore and shrink into mist. Genthe loved this soft pictorialist blur. It turns the meadow grass into dark velvet at your feet.
