About This Artwork

A portal to a vanished world—this phone case transforms your device into an artifact of colonial-era India, adorned with Hindu Merchants by Edwin Lord Weeks. Here, in a sun-drenched marketplace, a mounted trader pauses, his silver-grey steed draped in crimson finery. The turbaned merchant, dressed in flowing white, deciphers a letter—perhaps a contract, a ledger of goods, or news from distant lands. Above them, Indo-Islamic architecture stands in exquisite detail—ornate carvings, intricate latticework, the grandeur of Mughal and Rajput craftsmanship casting patterns of light and shadow.

Weeks, a master of 19th-century Orientalist painting, captures the golden haze of the subcontinent, blending realism with the romanticism of European academic art. This case preserves every delicate brushstroke—an oil-painted symphony of texture, history, and trade. Evocative, immersive, steeped in the mystique of the Silk Road, camel caravans and the spice trade. For lovers of fine art, antique aesthetics, and the forgotten grandeur of Rajasthan and the Deccan.

Origin Story

Edwin Lord Weeks (1849–1903) was an American painter whose mastery of Orientalist art transported viewers into the grandeur of distant lands. Born in Boston to a family of affluent spice merchants, Weeks was drawn to both painting and travel from an early age.

His artistic journey led him from the Florida Everglades to Surinam before settling in Paris, where he studied under Léon Bonnat and Jean-Léon Gérôme. His insatiable wanderlust took him across Egypt, Persia, Morocco, and India, where he captured architectural splendor, bustling markets, and golden desert light.

A consummate adventurer, Weeks chronicled his travels in From the Black Sea through Persia and India (1895), blending keen observation with painterly brilliance. His work, meticulously composed and rich with color, earned him accolades, including membership in the Légion d'honneur and the Munich Secession.

Though he died in Paris, his evocative canvases remain a portal to an opulent, bygone world.
